Jay Godfrey at FIG
by Elizabeth OMahony
Walking through the rows and rows of designers at FIG market in Dallas, you can’t miss designer Jay Godfrey’s booth. Colors like fuchsia, cobalt blue, red and purple pop out and grab your attention, just the way Godfrey wants it. His designs are often worn by celebs and can easily be found at Neiman Marcus and Tootsies locally. Godfrey has been a presence at FIG market for two years, and made a personal appearance recently at the spring market in order to meet some buyers and, as Godfrey commented, “embrace the regional market. There is a certain appeal to this market and it has a great intimate feel that I am drawn to”. While Godfrey has seen great success in Dallas, he wants to expand his presence to stores in Louisiana, Florida, and Mississippi.
After graduating from parsons, Godfrey interned for Oscar de la Renta and quickly realized that he wanted to “execute his own vision”. ”I wanted to create a line that was contemporary in price and designer in feeling. My clothes are sensual but not vulgar and embrace color, and modernism.” Godfrey believes that Dallas women in particular love his clothes because “There is a certain ease and sensuality and fun to them. Women know they will look and feel good in them. Dallas women attend a lot of events, they love color and want to look sexy and sophisticated.”
Six years after launching his own line, his company has grown a great deal and there is no sign of slowing down. Godfrey is working on his menswear line, something he has always wanted to do. ”I see a void in menswear. We need clothes that are affordable but have designer quality and versatility.” In addition to this, Godfrey has been working on opening his first store in New York City. “I have taken a lot of risks and shed a lot of blood, sweat, and tears since launching my line. My goal has always been to create a lifestyle with timeless pieces that make women feel confident and beautiful”. From the look of things, Godfrey has already achieved this. We can’t wait to see what else he has in store.
